AFRIMA MEETS ECCAS, UNESCO IN GABON, DISCUSSES PLANS TO STIMULATE AFRICA’S CREATIVE ECONOMY

Published

on

As the All Africa Music Awards began its countdown to the 2022 main awards ceremony, Monday, with the call for submission of entries from artistes, the continental awards platform has restated its commitment to uplifting the African creative economy, using music as its tool.

It made this known during a recent strategic stakeholder meeting, in Libreville, Gabon, with the President of Economic Community of Central African  States (ECCAS) Commission, Minister of Culture and Tourism, Gabon, delegates and senior officials from the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), as well as delegates from Centre International des Civilisations Bantu (CICIBA) who are excited about the AFRIMA initiative.

AFRIMA, which is in partnership with the African Union Commission (AUC), corroborated UNESCO’s standpoint, on the need to deepen Africa’s creative exports, especially through providing access to training and resources for young aspiring creatives.

According to UNESCO’s representative to Gabon and ECCAS, Mr. Eric Voli Bi, Africa’s creative economy needs more support and opportunities for the youth – who make up the larger chunk of the workforce – to thrive.

He said, “I must thank AFRIMA for constantly projecting the continent in a positive light to the world, and for giving African youths opportunities to be recognised on a continental and even global scale. UNESCO is always interested in youth education and development initiatives, and AFRIMA is one veritable platform to help stimulate potential among these youths. I believe, with one voice, we can speak louder. That is the way to go.”

The President of ECCAS Commission,  His Excellency Gilberto Da Piedade Vérissimoaccompanied by Her Excellency Ms. Kapinga-Yvette Ngandu, Commissioner in charge of the Department of Gender Promotion and Human and Social Developments, ECCAS, welcomed the AFRIMA delegates to its regional secretariat and pledged support towards AFRIMA. He assured that ECCAS will partner AFRIMA to provide capacity building for African youths across the central African region as well as develop its music industry.

Vérissimo said, “Every year, we see our African artistes shine on global levels. It will be retrogressive for us, if we do not invest in them as well. ECCAS, in partnership with the European Union, will continue to invest resources into capacity building for African youths, especially within the entertainment sector. Apart from healthcare and education, the cultural and creative sector of the Central African region is within our primary focus. We are excited that platforms like AFRIMA thrive to give voice to our objectives, and we will pull our weight behind it, for the growth of the continent.”

On behalf of the awards platform, the President and Executive President, AFRIMA, Mr. Mike Dada, assured Africans that the AFRIMA, which has been running since 2014, will continue to prioritise inclusivity in its capacity-building initiatives.

“AFRIMA, and all its supporting initiatives, like the Africa Creative Academy, which we have in the pipeline, is for the entire continent. It is not an East African affair, or a West African Affair. We are one voice and one platform for the African people. So, our capacity-building efforts will cover the length and breadth of the continent and the diaspora. We equally apply this same character in all our campaigns, especially our submission of entries which is ongoing from now till August 5, 2022; it covers everyone across the continent and the diaspora.

“We have done this since 2014, and we are committed to consolidating our efforts this year, with even more zeal, initiatives and twists, to make AFRIMA the pride of not just the African individual, but also every black person and lover of African music out there.”

The main ceremony of the All Africa Music awards will be held from Thursday, November 3 to Saturday, November 6, 2022. It will feature a 4-day fiesta of music, glitz, and glamour, which commences with a welcome soiree, followed by the AFRIMA Music Village, the host city tour, African Music Business Summit, and the exclusive nominees’ party, before culminating with the live awards ceremony broadcast to over 84 countries around the world.

The submission of entries for the awards is also ongoing for artistes, artiste managers, record producers, recording companies, video directors, disc jockeys and other relevant stakeholders can submit their work or submit on behalf of their clients via the official afrima website at www.afrima.org. All entries must be done in consonance with AFRIMA guidelines, which are also available on the website. Importantly, all prospective entries must have been created between August 20, 2021 and August 5, 2022, being the year in review for all submissions.

Lagos History Comes on Screen as Jide Kosoko Shoots Esugbayi Eleko

In a groundbreaking development for Nigerian cinema, renowned actor and producer, Prince Jide Kosoko is set to bring the compelling story of Lagos’ rich history to life with the production of Esugbayi Eleko. This film promises to be a cinematic exploration of the pivotal events that shaped colonial Lagos, blending drama, history, and cultural pride in a way never seen before.

The film focuses on the life and times of Oba Esugbayi Eleko, Herbert Macaulay and Alimotu Pelewura, some of Lagos’ most iconic figures in colonial Lagos and the absolute support and loyalty of the Idejos to the cause spareheaded by Oba Eleko.

Set in the early 19th century, Esugbayi Eleko delves into the challenges of Oba Esugbayi’s reign during the colonial era, his resistance, alongside Macaulay and Pelewura against British imperialism, and the cultural resilience of the people of Lagos.

Audiences will be transported to a Lagos colony grappling with the intersection of tradition and modernity, as well as the political struggles that defined an era. The movie captures not just the story of a man but the heart and soul of a people fighting for their identity.

What makes this project even more significant is that it is spearheaded by Prince Jide Kosoko, himself a Lagosian and a descendant of royalty. As a Prince of Lagos, Kosoko’s personal connection to the city’s history adds an unparalleled depth and authenticity to the storytelling.

“I have always dreamed of bringing the story of Lagos to the screen in a way that does justice to its complexity and grandeur,” Kosoko said during a press conference. “Oba Esugbayi Eleko was not just a king; he was a symbol of resistance, wisdom, and cultural preservation, these he did with his alliance with Macaulay, a prominent Lagosian and nationalist and Pelewura, one of the most enigmatic market women leaders in history. This story deserves to be told, and it’s a privilege to bring it to life as someone who shares in this heritage.”

Esugbayi Eleko will be one of the first major films to authentically portray part of the history of Lagos and the significant events of the colonial era. Unlike most historical movies that rely on generalized narratives, this production is rooted in meticulous research and deep cultural insights, offering a vivid retelling of key moments that shaped the city’s identity.

Kosoko’s production team has announced that the film will feature some of the best technical hands in the industry. Renowned cinematographers, award-winning set designers, and a host of top-notch costume designers will collaborate to recreate the colonial Lagos of the early 19th century.

“We are committed to authenticity,” Kosoko emphasized. “From the fabrics and architecture to the language and cultural practices, every detail will be carefully curated to ensure the audience is fully immersed in the world of Esugbayi Eleko.”

In addition, the production will employ cutting-edge filmmaking technology, including advanced CGI and motion capture, to seamlessly recreate historical settings and grandiose moments. Lagos of old will be brought to life in breathtaking detail, ensuring that audiences can fully experience the grandeur and challenges of the era.

The film will feature a cast of highly professional role interpreters, many of whom are seasoned veterans of the Nigerian film industry. While specific casting details are still under wraps, industry insiders suggest that the production will include some of the most respected actors, alongside a few emerging stars.

Kosoko also revealed plans to take Esugbayi Eleko beyond Nigerian borders. The film, according to him, will be good enough to participate in major international film festivals and distributed globally, ensuring that Lagos’ story reaches a worldwide audience.

“This is more than just a film; it is a legacy project,” Kosoko concluded. “Lagos is a city of resilience, beauty, and culture, and Esugbayi Eleko is our chance to showcase that to the world. We owe it to ourselves, our ancestors, and future generations to tell this story.”

As anticipation builds for Esugbayi Eleko, it is clear that this production is poised to be a defining moment in Nigerian cinema, a testament to the power of storytelling, and a celebration of Lagos’ enduring legacy.

Exclusive: Why Funke Akindele Left Femi Adebayo’s Seven Door Movie Premiere in Anger

Published

Funke Akindele, a prominent actor and producer celebrated for her recent film release, “Everybody Loves Jenifa,” was once again the center of attention during the premiere of her former lover, collaborator, and fellow actor Femi Adebayo’s much-anticipated movie, “Seven Doors.” This event took place at the Imax Cinema in Lekki Phase 1 on December 11, 2024. Many guests, including cast and crew members, gathered to get a glimpse of the new film, which is slated for release on Netflix tomorrow.
Eyewitness accounts reveal to CITYSPY that; Funke Akindele arrived at the venue accompanied by a group of about five individuals, consisting mainly of her assistants. However, Funke was the only member of her entourage to possess an access tag, as mandated by the event organizers, who had instructed security personnel to prioritize those with tags for crowd control purposes. While Funke and one other individual were allowed entry, the remaining three members of her party were denied access due to the security team not recognizing their association with her.
Instead of engaging with the security staff to clarify the situation—similar to how veteran actor Prince Jide Kosoko managed to gain entry for himself and his daughters, who also lacked tags—Funke reportedly became agitated. She expressed her frustration and abruptly left the event before the premiere started, making her way toward her car. Witnesses noted that many attendees expected her to handle the situation with more composure; after all, the security personnel were simply performing their duties.
As the incident unfolded, several senior actors present at the premiere attempted to intervene, calling Funke in hopes of calming her down and facilitating a resolution. However, she dismissed their concerns, got into her vehicle, and instructed her driver to leave the premises. This display of impatience and disregard for the assistance offered by her peers left a sour taste in the mouths of many attendees, who questioned why Funke Akindele, known to have a cordial relationship with Femi Adebayo, would react in such a manner—especially considering that Femi had supported her at her own movie premiere just days prior.
However, several eyewitnesses countered his perspective, explaining that it was Funke who had escalated a minor issue into something significant, when all that was required was a bit of patience and understanding to resolve the misunderstanding.
The reactions from veteran colleagues within the industry were overwhelmingly negative, as many felt that Funke’s behavior was not only insulting but also unbecoming of someone of her stature. They expressed their disappointment, noting how they had tried to reason with her as she departed the event without acknowledgment. Such responses have sparked discussions among industry peers about the importance of humility and professionalism, especially in public settings.
